One of the best moments came when the doctors decided that it was time to transition Caleb from an oscillating ventilator to a conventional ventilator. This is a huge step as once he maintains stability on the conventional ventilator, he can receive his CDH surgery to guide the organs in his chest back down into his abdomen and also, to close the hole in his diaphragm. The NICU doctors and pediatric surgeons will evaluate Caleb's progress daily and his surgery could be as early as next week. There is no rush for him to have his CDH surgery so they want to ensure his kidneys and respiratory functions continue to improve and that he is strong enough to endure the additional challenges that may occur after surgery. Although this is great news, it is also very scary as he is still battling the issues of prematurity everyday and he will then have to overcome surgery too. He has already proven to be our miracle boy and this is only the beginning...his strength is what will push him through the next stages of his recovery!
Caleb proved to be a fighter on days 11 and 12. He remained stable for most of these days and has made significant steps forward. Finally, with the help of the Lasix, his kidneys have started functioning again and he is producing significant amounts of urine. The renal team is pleased with the results and they will monitor his fluids to make sure that he gets the correct amount and does not become dehydrated.
